Tips for going back to school at an older age

Going back to school after a person has been out for a while can be challenging to say the least. It can be challenging in an educational sense as well as socially. After all, many classmates of an older person could possibly be their children or maybe even grandchildren! Here are some tips I have for people returning to school later in life:

1. Take extensive notes

2. Record the professor, if allowed
3. Ask questions any time you need to ask them
4. Show your teacher respect, even if they are quite younger than yourself
5. Don't be afraid to use the wisdom that you have gained over the years
6. Keep a day planner handy and write down everything you need to do for each class
7. Do not procrastinate...keep yourself on a rigid schedule so you do not get behind
8. Study, study, study

It may take time to get back in the mode of learning, but it will happen. You can start off by taking it slow. Maybe only take one or two classes at first. Once you have established a good learning and study pattern and reinvoked the learning part of your brain, you can add more classes the next semester.

Regarding the social silliness of many young college students: well, when I went back to college, I just ignored it and all the drama that comes with it. I noted that some of the other older students did not and it did nothing but serve as a distraction from what was really important, furthering their own education.

Get involved with groups that can help you educationally. If you feel lacking in some areas, are having problems with a specific subject or just aren't getting your questions answered satisfactorily in class, seek out a tutor. Many graduate students will tutor you for free or a small fee. Additionally, if there are areas that you are truly proficient, become a tutor yourself. Researching and answering another persons questions is a good way to open your mind and learn more.

Take things slow, keep yourself on task and ask as many questions as you need to gain understanding. Participate in discussion and read. These things will open your mind up to the joys learning and going back to school.
