What were the top celebrity comebacks of 2008?

by Amanda Vittitow

I am addicted- and I mean addicted- to getting online and looking through People magazine's website. There you can find out anything and everything about any celebrity- every smile, every tear, every relationship, every pregnancy, every breakdown, every stint of rehab, every fit of rage, and so on. And there's no one on the face of the Earth that has had every little piece of her life broadcasted than Britney Spears. For some reason, paparazzi love this girl. They love to see every aspect of her life- from her blossoming relationship with Justin Timberlake to the night she locked herself in her house and wouldn't turn her youngest son over to her ex-husband's bodyguard. So is it any wonder that she has had the greatest downfall but also had the greatest comeback in 2008?

From the time Britney was eleven years old, she was in the spotlight where she was cast into the Mickey Mouse Club, along side of Christina Aguilara and Justin Timberlake. In 1998, the seventeen year old debuted her single "Baby One More Time" and posed on the Rolling Stone cover. In 2000, Oops I Did It Again debuted at Number 1 and sold over one-million copies. Also her relationship with Justin Timberlake was going strong, only to have it fizzle in 2002. In 2003, she had the infamous lip-lock with Madonna at the MTV Video Music Awards while her ex-boyfriend Justin looked at her blankly (the world was waiting for a reaction that never came). Later in 2003 her cd In the Zone and gets her the first Grammy win from the song, "Toxic."

But as the saying goes, "All good things must come to an end."

In 2004, Britney gets the odd idea to fly to Las Vegas and to marry her childhood friend, Jason Alexander, but the marriage is annulled fifty-five hours later. Later on in the year, she meets wannabe bad boy Kevin Federline and is married to him about five months later. In 2005, Brit and Kev have Sean Preston and then have Jayden James in 2006. Britney files for divorce in 2007 from K-Fed, as he's called and she starts partying with Paris Hilton.

After her relationship with K-Fed ended and her partying days started, this is where Britney goes from Girl Next Door to Girl with Some Serious Mental Issues. She had several stints of being in and out of rehab. She shaved her head and was released from rehab after completing her one month stay. In July and August, Kevin and Britney's custody began where random drug tests are performed and she must meet with a parenting coach. Needless to say she loses temporary custody of her boys. In late August, she tries to make a comeback only to get laughed at. On stage she seems to be disoriented and clearly lip-synching.

The beginning of 2008 proves to be no better than 2007. Britney is still in custody battles with K-Fed, but she either shows up late, shows up for a few minutes, or doesn't show up at all. As a last resort, she locks herself in a room with Jayden and refuses to hand him over to K-Fed's bodyguard. After a four hour standoff with authorities, Britney is taken out on a gurney and her mental state is evaluated. She is diagnosed with bipolar, and her kids are taken away.

This seems to be the straw that broke the camel's back because next thing you know, Britney is slowly and steadily getting her life back. Her father, Jamie, takes over her affairs, getting rid of her destructive confidant, Sam Lufti. She is spending more time with her boys and eventually gets visitation rights back. She is doing guest appearances on the TV show How I Met Your Mother. She wins 3 Moonmen at the MTV Video Music Awards for her song "Piece of Me," and her album Circus goes to Number 1 in its first week.
By the time 2008 ends, she is on the cover of Rolling Stone with a toned body, looking even more beautiful than when she posed for them the first time, only this time she's older and hopefully a lot wiser.
