How should we lead our children to God

Introducing the bible to a toddler can be a daunting task...Where do you start? How do you make it engaging so your kids want to read the bible? Start with the great characters of the bible. Many stories in the bible are just as interesting as The Adventures of Mickey and friends, etc. There are tons of books out there that are centered on the great stories of the bible or you can paraphrase and act out stories from your own bible. Here are some ideas from both the Old and New Testament to get you started:

1. Noah's Ark (Genesis 6-7)

2. David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17)

3. Daniel and the Lion's Den (Daniel6)

4. The Wise Men (Matthew 2:1-12)

5. Jesus Calms the Storm (Matthew 8:23-27, Mark 4:35-41)

6. The Lost Sheep (Matthew 18:10-14, Luke 15:4-7)

Another way to introduce your children to the bible is through a family devotion time. A baby or toddler may not be able to understand all of the concepts but they can understand the importance of sharing your faith as a family. Here are some tips to help you make this a fun and rewording time for the whole family

1. Pick the right time. Try to find a time that works for everyone and can be done consistently with as few interruptions as possible.

2. Have a Plan. Pick a book of the bible or a specific theme.

3. Keep it short. Read a short passage and discuss for 3-5 minutes. The act of family devotions is more important than the length.

4. Include a prayer time where you can you pray for issues specific to your family as well as others.

As parents we already know the benefits of reading to our young children. Since you'll be reading anyway, you might as well be introducing them to basic biblical principles at the same time. Here are some suggestions if you're in need of re-stocking your little one's library with some books you don't already have memorized!

1. The Whale and Jonah: A Story of Obedience and Forgiveness by Deedra Scherm

2. Noah's Big Boat by Allia Zobel-Nolan

3. I See the Colors God Made by Laura Ann Miller

4. The Tale of Three Trees by Angela Elwell Hunt

5. Kindness Counts by Debby Anderson

6. Baby's First Prayers compiled by Standard Publishing

7. How Big is God? by Lisa Tawn Bergren

Discipleship begins in the home and with these easy and family-friendly techniques you will be able to introduce even your youngest family member to the importance of knowing God's word and living a life that is pleasing to Him.
