You can use the T to go practically anywhere in Boston. The T is open every day from early morning to late at night. The trains come frequently, so wait time is usually five to fifteen minutes, with the shorter time being more common.
The T is crowded to the point where there are no empty seats during the morning rush hour when everyone wants to get to work and the afternoons when the Red Sox are playing.
Only two items are required to navigate Boston, a subway map and a map of Boston. Most tourists visit the same general sights, so a free map from a Trolley Tour company-which includes a map of the T-can prove a tourist's most useful accessory. The Trolley Tour maps include a list of the best places to visit, and these spots are marked on the map.
If you don't mind asking for directions, the map of Boston can be left behind. People in Boston are pretty friendly, and they can tell you where to go after you get off the T to reach your destination.
Also, Boston has the Freedom Trail, which is a red line on the street that a tourist can follow to see many of Boston's historic sights.
Boston is not a city where you need a car to get around. Walking and taking the T are the most common modes of transport.
