truth to ourselves. The following are a list of true statements that we could start with.
1.) No country has a perfect past. We've all been aggressors, wimps or losers at some time in our past. Countries are made of people and generally people are the same the world over.
2.) Just because we're a powerful nation; it doesn't make us any smarter or wiser than any other country.
3.) Other people are allowed to disagree with us. Do we still feel the need to call fried potato strips independence fries instead of French fries just because the French people chose not to become involved in the invasion of Iraq? Do we now feel like we should have invaded Iraq? (I personally think we needed to help save the Iraqi people from Saddam Hussein and help stabilize the country until they could provide their own effective leadership.) Many people who were once for the invasion have since changed their minds. They now seem to agree with the French perspective. Unfortunately I view the Twin Tower incident as an ants and elephant problem. The bite of an ant doesn't really bother the elephant unless the bite is somewhere sensitive. While the elephant can kill thousands of ants with ease; it only stirs up more ants. The only smart choice for the elephant is to move away from the ants. The 9/11 tragedy was terrible, but the whole point behind the attack was to embroil America in a war that would polarize world opinion and antagonize the Arab world
4.) We need laws and rules that make sense in today's world. If we keep someone in prison for committing a crime, what do we gain from the imprisonment? If it costs two hundred thousand dollars to keep someone in jail and while they're there they get three meals a day, shelter, free legal services and other benefits; would these people be in jail if we had been able to provide all that in the first place? It sounds like a hotel when I say it like that. I understand most residents think of it as a really bad hotel but that's because we allow it to be that way on purpose. Its supposed to be very unpleasant. We want to sort of torture the inmates in a nice way. We let them do it to each other. Wouldnt it be more humane just to shoot many of the inmates? It would certainly save the country a lot of money.
The point of the article is that we do stupid things because we haven't tried very hard to do better. The first step to doing better is to try to envision solutions. To think about what we're doing and why. Just maybe we should listen to what other people in thw world have to say as well. After all we're planning on sharing the planet for some time to come aren't we?

Let's define "stupid" before we begin to answer the question, "Are Americans really stupid versus the rest of the World?".
Well, the short answer is no. But it sure looks that way from the outside sometimes...
Somewhere around the conflicts
by Mavis Stucci
Americans are not 'stupid' but are often too insular in their education and too complacent about where they think they stand.
