Divorce is expensive because it is worth it. By the time you have gotten past the emotional freefall that always precedes your decision to divorce you will be in some state of acceptance. You might never be able to understand what happened and correct those shortcomings and quite honestly, it will become less and less important to you over time. There are no winners in divorce court.

The rules and laws regarding divorce are wide ranging and vary from state to state. Some states have relatively easy laws to understand, other states have complex and difficult laws to manage. If you are new to divorce and unaware of what you are about to encounter, you are better off enlisting the help of a professional divorce attorney.

Unless you have a huge financial empire, the biggest and most common problematic area for many people is child custody. Ironing out child support and actually receiving it can be very difficult, if not impossible. Arranging custody and visitation can also be arduous and hard to accomplish. Emotions and beliefs simply get in the way. Divorcing couples are emotionally and often financially overburdened. Sometimes the only way to hammer out a resolution or agreement regarding children is to simply let your lawyer try to arrange a situation that both sides find agreeable. Those orders can be modified in the future and often are.

Dividing assets and liabilities in the form of bills, can be tricky business as well. It is not unheard of for one spouse to take the lion's share of the debt and then simply declare bankruptcy after the divorce is final. Since you most likely acquired those debts during your marriage, the non bankrupt party may be liable for all of those debts. Providing future health care costs and educational costs for your children also becomes part of the future debt picture. Dividing assets, particularly those with potentially increasing values or those with emotional attachments such as pets, can be difficult as well.

In some instances, it is possible to file for divorce when finances are relatively simple and there are no children involved. Some of these types of divorces are done when both parties simply realize that they made a mistake and they are dealing with it in a non-emotional and rational way without getting nasty and mean spirited. Those types of divorces tend to be the exception and not the rule. If you think it is possible to file a divorce by yourselves and agree to the terms, and you can live with the potential outcome, then it might be possible. But that is rare. It is almost always in your best interests to obtain a lawyer and pay those additional costs. A simple consultation with an experienced divorce lawyer in your state can give you an idea of what to expect and explain a lot of the common pitfalls with those folks who try to file for divorce on their own. Investing a little extra up front can save you a lot of money in the future. It might be the best money you will spend.
