Should alternative medicine be 'alternative?'

Health-we all want it. We spend much time, energy, and money trying to obtain it, yet it proves elusive for many of us. We learn to live with the health drawbacks we have and we take over-the-counter pills or prescription drugs to "get us through" the frequent times we struggle with illness and disease. Surely there is a better way.

Every culture throughout history has developed its own methods for healing. In the West, the health care professionals' answer is often prescription drugs. While prescription drugs have generally had the desired effect, they often bring undesirable side effects also. Before you know it, you are not only taking a drug for the disease, but also more drugs to counteract the side effects brought on by the first drug.

Medicine throughout the ages has had its positive results and its negative results. Even the best medicine cannot cure everything. But there are alternative methods of treatment that offer far greater results with far fewer risks to the overall health of an individual.

People in the West would do well to look beyond the mainstream health system to find longterm answers. Health can be obtained without the risk of the many side effects that prescription drugs bring. There is a better way. Why should it be alternative?
