Today you start your leadership as the President of these United States of America and although I know you know this, there is something far more pertinent than being a great leader that I would like to talk to you about.
Today you are a husband and a father just as you were yesterday. I know Michelle understands the time that you need to be away just as we all do as we go to our places of employment. Our jobs, however, are not as frustrating or demanding as yours is, oh maybe to us they are, but not even close to yours. Michelle and the children will be happy to see you in the morning and late in the evening and will busy themselves with other things. They will go to school come home and do their homework. You will lead a nation. You may come home tired and depressed on some days. You may not even come home some days. The long hours will take time from you and your role as husband and father. This is what I would like to address.
Barack, Sir, please remember that all the stress of the day is also on Michelle. She has to closely guard the children. Guarding their minds and hearts will be her job even more than it was before. I know your family is there to help, but she also needs to be there for your children. There may be days when you cannot be home or too tired to discuss things. There may be things you cannot discuss even with Michelle. On these times when your absence leaves a hole in her heart, send her a note of love or bring her a flower. It does not have to be anything expensive, just a token to show her how much you love her. This is a hard road for you and I am sure you are aware of that, but also a hard road for her.
Mr. President, children grow so fast these days; I know I have watched my own grow so quickly. It seems yesterday they were babies and now two have babies of their own. Do not let the time pass you by where you miss a twinkle in one of your daughter's eyes. Yes, there will be times that maybe you cannot attend a school function, it happens to us all, no one is perfect. If you cannot, then make sure you watch those pictures of the play or function. Make sure they know that Daddy is there and will never be away from them for long. I know they are intelligent girls, but sometimes it is very hard for them to not have that kiss goodnight. Read them a story when you can, talk about your day if you are able. Before you know it they will be older than you can realize.
Maybe you know all of this and have talked it over with your family. I am sure they know that it will be different. How different can never be explained in words until you are living in that big White House. Let Michelle and the girls know that they are your left arm even though you have given your right arm to our country.
Thank you for listening to an old woman. I am proud to live and serve in this country under your direction.
