There are many non-workrelated ways to distract yourself, but know that most companies monitor things such as internet use. Many even block sites that are not work-related. As such, it is important to distract yourself in ways that are not going to cost you your job! Here are some ideas:
1. Listen to an MP3 player or ipod as you work if your job permits. Listen to your favorite music or to a favorite NPR program. It feels like a little gift to yourself to be able to enjoy these treats in an unenjoyable environment.
2. Make your office space your own. If you are permitted, hang pictures of favorite vacations or people, hang one of your kids' pieces of artwork. Post a beautiful calendar (marking off the days until your vacation)! Bring in some fun penholder and a nice bulletin board. A nice workspace also leaves a good impression with the boss!
3. Get out during lunchtime or your break. Instead of staying at your desk during breaks, go outside for a little while and walk or just sit. The extra exercise will give you an energy boost and the change of scenery (and stale air) will refresh you. If you work near a park, you might even meet your family or a friend for a picnic. Or head home for a little while if you have time.
4. Do something fun or healthy after work. It's easier to make it through the day if you know that at quitting time you'll be doing something you enjoy like going to the gym or heading for the bookstore for a little while. It might also just be heading home and playing with your kids or jogging with the dog. Have something to look forward to.
5. Make lunches special. Okay, food isn't supposed to be a reward, but good food is one of the pleasures of life so make a great lunch for yourself! Make it healthy and delicious and it'll be a nice pick-me-up halfway through the never-ending workday.
6. Use gadgets that are not trackable like a talking picture frame or a photo album keychain so get a little love from loved ones at home when things get really bad! Hearing a loved one's voice or seeing your dog or kids will instantly calm you down.
7. Practice relaxation techniques, whether it's meditation, a quiet mantra you say to yourself when things are crazy, or a little desk exercise like rolling your shoulders and flexing your feet. Get up and walk around for a minute every hour to keep that blood circulating!
8. The best way to distract yourself from a job you hate is to actively work to get a new one! Take a night class or an online class that will put you one your way to a new and better career. Volunteer on days off in a field that you love. Sometimes that leads to a contact that gets you into a job in an area that your enjoy! Stay positive - things will get better! Make it happen!
