What can we really do for Darfur

by Damon Mathews

Created on: January 20, 2009

The United States has many options available to help Darfur. China being the main backer of the Sudanese government, and the United States being China's largest trading partner, we have tremendous voice and leverage to deal with the challenges Sudan presents, and in ending the ongoing crisis in Darfur.

The United States and China hold the Keys to bring all parties to the table, however, if the United States, or China, continue their pursuit of supremacy by any means necessary, or cost, the road will be perilous for Darfur, Sudan, and the World. Stability in Sudan is important to the stability of many of it's neighbors, and the region in general.

It will take a unified effort from many of the world's major powers to help stabilize Sudan toward something which doesn't claim the lives of even more people then the 300,000 already lost in Darfur.

President Bashir, leaders of the Janjaweed, and certain rebel groups of Darfur should be held accountable for their actions.

The upcoming ICC (International Criminal Court) indictment of President Bashir for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity is coming at a decisive moment. While this is happening the international community has an opportunity to form and implement a more far reaching peace deal which encompasses carrying out the CPA, (Comprehensive Peace Agreement) ending north-south hostilities, also, to develop a realistic process by which Bashir can be removed from power. An in depth analysis of the direct and indirect causes of Darfur should be preformed, accompanied by an emphasis on the compensation, and the means to compensation, contained in the CPA, with regard to the victims, going as far as helping the civilian population of Darfur, and the south get back on it's feet, recover, and prosper, both short and long-term.

We also need to be mindful of voices in Sudan who seek to replace Bashir, possibly not as president, but, as supreme leader, above the next president. Mindful of the fact they can be every bit as bad or worse, as they consolidate and build power to threaten beyond Darfur, Sudan, or even Africa. The international community should take steps to put their ability to threaten, in check, in advance.

In acknowledging this we must also acknowledge that maybe these parties in Khartoum are all on the same side, as access to them is to free to suppose otherwise; none truly holding the ideal of Bashir's extradition seriously, and he actually taking orders from them. We must look at the possible games
