The answer to the question "What is hacking?" depends on who is
asking that question, and who is demanding an answer. Hacking is
a show of prowess, whereby an experienced and (usually) talented
computer user (typically a programmer) decides to perform some
feat (on the computer) which is not commonplace.
Hacking, therefore, can refer to the good acts, the bad acts, and
the ugly acts. The ugly acts are those acts that are not strictly
good, and not strictly bad.
If I find a way to crash your system (computer) without leaving a
trace whatsoever, then that's cool, but its ugly.
The best way to show knowledge of hacking ability is to crash
someone's computer. Another way is to access hidden files and
data stored in protected areas.
I wrote an article on writing computer viruses on my website - i
even included full source code of one virus I wrote a while back.

It can be a good starting point for the novice dreamer who is
asking the question I asked as a 15 year old computer muggle :
"Will I ever write a virus?"
