Population growth, poverty and environmental degradation

by Tezzasul

Humanity versus the Environment.

Let's assume with a little imagination, that Adam and Eve actually existed way back in mythological history. Even though, according to the story, they were the first two people on earth and apparently living in a paradise, it is difficult to believe their lives were totally serene and similar to couples throughout history they probably suffered an occasional cross word, disagreement, or bloody great row!

I use these two storybook icons and their possible relationship problems as a metaphor to help explain a remarkable, possibly unique condition which we humans have acquired during our evolutionary journey through to today, a condition so normal to us; we barely bother to think about it. We all reason continually most of our lives on varying intellectual levels; an absolutely remarkable ability, which as far as we know, is not shared on such a level by any other animal species on this planet.

Throughout our history this incredible mind condition has caused us as much anguish as it has fulfilment, the complexity of reason absolutely boundless and I suggest that even today and the foreseeable future we have not and will not have the capacity to totally understand, or ability to fully control this unique odyssey in our heads.

Our ability to reason has also challenged nature's natural wasting process of humanity. It has been estimated that around the world today, on average two humans die each second, where as in the same short time period three are born! As a result the human population and associated material requirements continue to grow at a phenomenal pace, the consequence in my opinion is, today there are at least two billion humans more than this planet and its dwindling resources can possibly cope with.

You may also have noticed that world political and religious leaders refuse to recognise this most serious, patently obvious problem! Therefore,

We are effectively at war with our own environment!

You will doubtless agree with me when I suggest that there should be a natural symmetry between our world and all creatures that reside upon it. Nature has a plan and left to its own devises throughout history it has effectively dealt with all problems as they occur, most plants and creatures living within natures laws. Humans are a different proposition though, simply because we reason and do not always comply with nature's rules, in fact, along with an endless negative list, we have extended our lives far beyond natures original plan for us, almost certainly upsetting a long established balance between all the species on this planet.

Returning briefly to the Adam and Eve story, their assumed dispute has grown since that initial argument, continuing on a global scale. Throughout human history there have been countless conflicts, wars and skirmishes, generally due to various disagreements, brought on by the less pleasing side of our nature, such as greed, ownership, religion, jealousy, rage etc.

There is little doubt that the human species and its ability to reason has to take most, if not full responsibility for the present precarious situation of this planet and all its residents. therefore perhaps we should use these unusual reasoning powers to work along with nature, not against it! Easy to say of course, but almost impossible to adopt with traditional human arrogance and our many desires.

An apparent insolvable problem is because of reason,
we all (thats six/seven billion of us) receive and often act individually on information received, a quandary that to date has been almost insurmountable and perhaps future major political decisions will have to be made by a passion free independent super computer.

It is quite remarkable that today humans have reached a stage in their development where they have the ability to totally abuse and ruin our home and presently only refuge. Even stranger that we should want to do so and probably already half way through the evil deed.
