A resume is one of the first and most important things that an employer will look at to assess your qualifications for the position you are applying for. Making a good impression is key to getting the job you want. A resume is looked at for an average of eight seconds. Your resume needs to be neat and professional. In your resume you have to sell yourself. Remember to keep it short and simple, most people prefer 1 page. Keep the font simple and consistent, no larger than 12 point font. The objective states what kind of job you want. The summary is a statement of why you are qualified for the job. Do not use both summary and objective pick one of the other. The objective is more helpful if you are just starting out in the work world and don't have a lot of real world experience. If you are too specific with the objective you can limit yourself. You really want to try to grab the reader's attention. A weak summary will turn an employer off. The experience section is the main part of the resume. The two main formats are chronological and functional. Chronological takes the reader back in time starting with the most resent event. There is no need to put everything you have done just use last three. Each job is listed then give a brief description of what you did at that job. For the education section list the type of degree and accomplishments. List some courses that pertain to the job, and throw in relevant training. Mention if you speak another language it is always good. Do not put anything salary related, and avoid the obvious. Always use a cover letter; it gives the employer an idea of who you are. The first paragraph should explain why you are writing. The opening line needs to grab the attention of the reader. The second paragraph explains why they should pick you for the position. It also explains how your skills match the requirements. The third paragraph should show off your personality. The fourth paragraph is the closing paragraph. Do not ask for the interview. A full block format gives a clean professional look. Make sure it is easy to read, and there are no run on sentences. Have someone read it before sending it in. Always make sure you sign the bottom. When you proof read don't rush or you might miss some mistakes. Use plain white paper and keep it on a disk. If you are mailing your resume and cover letter use a 9x5 envelope.
