Memory is the process of retaining and recollecting information that was stored in the brain at an earlier time. A good memory could be indispensable in any profession. Good memory shows up as dedication, resourcefulness and being able to pay attention to details in the workplace. People with good memory are considered smart and intelligent. With good memory there is more scope for development and promotion. Employers strive hard to hire and keep keep people with these qualities.

Some situations where a good memory comes in extremely useful

1. Remembering a business contact that you've only met once before for 5 minutes in a party who casually mentioned where and what department they worked for. You need to call them almost a year later to clinch an important deal.

2. At the end of an interview, thanking an interviewer as 'Thank You, Mr.Jackson', instead of mumble a 'Thanks' that does not stand out. Remembering to send a hand-written 'Thank you' note or an email thanking for the interview could make an indelible mark.

3. Remembering a co-worker's Birthday and wishing them when they least expect it.

4. Remembering and acting on-time to complete an important project on deadline that the manager has overlooked.

5. Remembering personal appointments and being able to juggle work and home efficiently.

6. Being able to recollect details from a training you attended a while ago and its now time to apply those details on a time-critical project.

7. Being able to recollect details quickly and correctly when writing a certification or continuing credit examination.

8. Efficient problem solving skills by being able to remember and learn from previous experiences.

There are many other ways one's memory could be used to great advantage. While it may seem like some people are naturally gifted with a good memory, there are many ways to develop a good memory.

1. Recollecting often

People with good memory often employ recollecting information many times before its actually time to use the information. Recollecting information strengthens the pathways in the brain and makes information retrieval faster.

2. Using mnemonics

A Mnemonic is a memory aid. Its the process of using a construct that is easy to remember to recollect a piece of information or data.

3. Writing down information

Writing information that could be easily forgotten is a very effective way of forming stronger pathways of recollection in the brain.

4. Focus

Anything that is focused on, without being distracted, can be remembered for longer. Reducing mental chatter is a very effective way of keeping the cobwebs at bay, in the brain. An uncluttered brain is a better storage and retrieval unit.

5. Meditation and Relaxation Techniques

Better focus can be achieved by calming the mind with mindfulness meditation and some slow, deep breathing techniques. This process is gradual but definite improvements can be felt in a month or two, with regular practice.
