On January the 20th 2009 history will be made in the USA. The first ever Black President will be inaugurated, bringing with him the hopes and dreams of a country that seems to of lost its identity over the last decade. The outgoing commander in chief, George W Bush, has taken the brunt of America's and the world's anger. Every civilian and military death has been pinned on him. He has even been labelled as mass murdering war criminal, meaning that Mr Bush will leave the oval office as the most unpopular President of all time.
But why is this so? What has happened for the whole of America to turn their backs on the man who is supposed to the symbol of their shining democracy and the leader of the western world?
The Iraq War
It was a speech made a short time after the atrocities of 911. President Bush probably had his highest approval rating in his 8 year term as President. It was a speech that brought a country in mourning together holding hands in defiance against global terrorism.
He talked about a no holds barred war on terror. America cheered. He talked about treating the terrorists and the countries that harbour them with the same force. America cheered. Soon after that they commenced bombing of one of the poorest countries in the world, Afghanistan. America cheered. America then invaded Iraq and brought about the down fall it tyrannical leader. Who was later executed after being tried and convicted of mass genocide by his peers in a now democratic Iraq. Once again America cheered.
So what changed? What has made a war that that was once so right, once so justified in the eyes of the American people so evil? An evil that it seems George Bush must pay for.
Weapons of Mass Destruction
George Bush lied when he told us all that Iraq had a secret stash of super weapons. You know it, I know it even my pet goldfish Snowy knows it. But to me this was a totally necessary lie to make. It was necessary to gain quick UN approval for the invasion. An invasion that would help being down one of the most evil men in history. What was the alternative, to leave Saddam Hussein in charge to slaughter more of his own people? To leave a man that welcomed the 911 attacks to use his country as a safe haven for terrorists to plan their next move?
I take you back to that George Bush speech made just after 911.
"We will not differentiate between the terrorists and those who harbour them". America cheered.
