Through the daycare classes and the college psychology classes that I have taken, I have learned that children learn best by example. They need to be instructed and led by positive influences such as parents, teachers or a close-family friend.
I believe that teenage girls should learn the responsibility of good feminine hygiene before they reach their teen years. One way that I believe mother's can do this is by allowing your child to observe your daily hygiene routine. Children learn and imitate the things that they see. If your child sees you take a shower, put on deodorant, brush your teeth, do your hair and make-up every day, she will want to do it to.
A child can only get away with poor hygiene if their parents allow them to. It is a mother's responsibility to teach their girls feminine hygiene, just as it is a man's responsibility to teach their son how to urinate properly standing up. These are responsibilities that can not be carried out by the opposite sex.
I have started my 7-year-old daughter out every night by taking a bath or a shower, putting on deodorant, brushing her teeth and then her hair before bed. Then when she wakes up in the morning she needs to eat breakfast, brush her teeth and brush her hair before school. This is a beginning motivation to encouraging proper hygiene.
I believe that if you are speaking in terms of "feminine hygiene" meaning Premenstrual age, that this is something that needs to be addressed and discussed with the child by the parents in pre-teen years so that they have a proper understanding of the issue before it happens to them. If a mother, explains to her childby walking through the steps, they will be more properly equipped to handle the matter when it occurs.
Feminine Hygiene is a matter of personal preferences. Each female prefers different forms of protection and hygiene products. But regardless of the product of choice, there are some basics that teenage girls need to understand. They should be educated to calendar their cycles, this way they know about when to expect it and they can prepare by carrying the appropriate supplies. This will save them from some embarrassment when their are in a public place and start their cycle. They should be educated on changing their protection products and encouraged to shower daily to prevent any unpleasant odors.
These are just a few of the basics, but a very important foundation for teenage girls to know before the last minute.
