Highschool transcripts: Tips for homeschool educators

by Lerrina Collins

Created on: January 20, 2009

Your student's highschool transcript is one of the most important documents you, as their parent, will prepare for your child. Regardless of your child's future plans, a high school transcript is not an option. Today, not only are transcripts required for college entry, but they can reduce your child's auto insurance rates, are required if your child enters the military, applies for a government job, or even goes to work for many trucking companies.

A highschool transcript is an official document. Much like a diploma, your child's highschool transcript carries a lot of weight. As a result, it needs to be professional. All the pertinent information must be included. Everything needs to be presented in a concise manner. Even the transcript's appearance matters. Thus a neatly typed, concisely stated, two page (one sheet - front and back only) transcript on letterhead should be your goal.

Every transcript must include certain information presented in this general order:

SCHOOL INFORMATION

School name (Johnson's Homeschool is sufficient), address, and phone number

The words: "Official Highschool Transcript"

Graduation date - This MUST be an actual date - month, day, year. If you are preparing your child's homeschool transcript for prospective college applications before graduation, put your child's target graduation date. If, however, your child's schooling goes more than 2 months beyond this date, change the date to reflect one which is more accurate.

Attendance Dates - for example, September 2002 - May 2006

STUDENT INFORMATION

Student's name

Student's address

Student's phone number

Student's birth date

Student's social security number - While some debate whether this is necessary (if your child is not applying for financial aid), most college admissions recommend it.

Student's gender

Name(s) of legal parent or guardian - list both, if both are living in the child's home.

COURSE - DESCRIPTION - CREDIT'S EARNED - GRADES

Course title - keep this specific. Instead of "World History I" and "World History II", write the specific course - i.e. "9th grade Ancient World History" and "10th grade Modern World History". For work study courses write an actual course title - i.e. "12th grade Small Engine Repair" (community colleges are a great source for course title ideas)

Description - a brief one line description of the course - i.e. "Introduction to grammar & composition" or "In depth study of the events and ideas which shaped world history in the 20th century"

Credit's earned - A Carnegie
