How to take care of pregnant pets

Though it may be a little overwhelming, nearly any devoted pet owner can manage caring for a pregnant cat. The average gestation periods last around nine weeks, with most queens birthing from 2-6 kittens. Pregnant cats younger than 1 year and older than 8 years need extra special care; they have the highest risk of complications and death during delivery.

The Healthiest Diet

Kitten kibble has more calcium, fat, and protein than regular cat food. Mixing it with the queen's normal food will help her stay happy and healthy. Just make sure the main ingredient is chicken - not corn. Feed your cat many small meals throughout each day. She should be eating twice as much as usual once she's about to give birth. Consult the vet about edible medicines like flea and worm remover. Never give medicine to pregnant cats without permission from a professional.

The Right Environment

Because they can get pregnant again, queens should be kept indoors. They can carry two litters at once! Within 2 weeks of the estimated birth date, separate the queen from all other animals in the house. She will definitely want her privacy. Since the cat may start nesting with towels and sweaters, hide your fancy fabrics. If you want to help, place a shallow box in your closet and line it with newspaper. Use no-clump litter in case your cat decides to give birth in the litter box.

Tips for the Caretaker

Poking the queen's belly or rubbing it too hard can cause problems like miscarriage and stillbirth. Keep pressure off her belly, especially when you need to pick her up. She might get really bulky. If her size starts to prevent proper grooming, clean her yourself! Use a wet cloth to wash her little behind, and gently brush her coat each day. Caring for a pregnant cat is not always easy, but it's nothing you can't handle. Keep the vet's contact info in case of an emergency.
