no evidence to back up the physicians' belief in conventional cancer treatments. A man named William Halsted, who is considered the father of surgery here in the United States, hypothesized that cancer grew by spreading tentacles out from a specific area into the rest of the body. His treatments of breast cancer often included the removal of the whole breast. But at that time nobody knew that carcinogenic cells traveled via the blood stream. When cancer spread to other organs in the body, it was believed that the tentacles grew in those directions. This theory became the foundation for which oncological surgery was built.
Doctors believed that removing any cancerous tissue would give the patient a better chance at survival. So the mastectomy became most commonly used, unfortunately these procedures were disturbing and often compromised the patients quality of life.
Yet, this surgery procedure was soon applied to other forms of cancer.
It was not until 1810, that evidence of cancerous cells spreading via the blood stream came to light. This process soon took on the name metastasis. Although the discovery of metastasis made cancer even more intangible, many hoped that because Halsted's hypothesis was severely flawed, that the practice of such procedures would cease, but that was not the case. Many doctors today continue to perform these surgeries without any scientific foundation. The medical community failed to abandon a procedure that is based on a false hypothesis.
Then comes radiation therapy, early on it was proved to be non-effective, but instead of discontinuing use, doctors would apply increasingly aggressive doses. The results were patients that were burned, and in some cases they sustained irreversible damage. This procedure seriously reduced the patient's quality of life.
Soon after, chemotherapy was found to show no improvements for cancer patients either. A major study into the effectiveness of chemotherapy was conducted by Dr. Ulrich Abel; Dr. Abel was a German epidemiologist and biostatistician. In the eighties, he contacted over 350 medical centers around the world requesting any and all information on the subject of cancer. By the time he published his report and his book "Advanced Epithelial Cancer" his knowledge of chemotherapy surpassed that of any other medical professional.
Here is a quote from his report in the Lancet, August of 1990, "Success of most chemotherapies is appallingThere is no scientific evidence for its ability to extend in any
