There are so many things you can purchase for parents expecting a baby that don't cost a lot! Your best bet is to go with practical gifts. Sure, those cute little outfits are hard to resist, but the parents may not ever get to use them.

Here are some good items to consider(most store brands are very good quality these days, too.) Or you could even check your local dollar store for:

-Diapers
-Baby wipes
-burp cloths
-infant hats/caps
-Gas drops (mylicon)
-Infant tylenol
-Baby Cereal
-Scratch mittens
-Instant hand sanitizer (like germ-x)
-A package of bottles
-pacifiers
-thermometer
-diaper ointments
-booties
-a light blanket or two
-A dishwasher basket for bottles (if they plan on washing bottles in the dishwasher)
-brush and comb set
-crib sheets
-a night light for the baby's room
-infant socks
-onesies
-bibs
-Make a gift basket of cheap toys: rattles, soft stuffed toys, cloth books, etc.
-washcloths
-baby lotion
-picture frames for the parents
-make dinner for the new parents one or more nights when they come home from hospital.
-offer to help with their household chores (wait for them to ask you, don't force yourself on them.)

All of these things are fairly inexpensive, but the parents will definitely appreciate them. They are more likely to use diapers and baby wash than a full body winter suit for the baby (when they never get to leave the house!)
