Entrepreneurship: Signs you are on the right track

by Patricia Gilliam

Created on: January 19, 2009

With entrepreneurship and business ownership, it can sometimes be hard to tell if you're on the right track due to results not always being immediate. Almost every entrepreneur goes through a learning process where they experiment with ideas and gradually gain more and more confidence and experience. You have to find a balance between not doing knee-jerk decisions just before your results are going to come and not continuing to follow decisions that get you nowhere.

In some situations, it's hard while you're in the middle of the situation to know the difference. This is when having an objective mentor or experienced business friend to bounce off ideas and get feedback. In addition to direct financial results, here are some signs you're on the right track with your business.

1) Are you continuing to educate yourself about your business or field on a regular basis?

This will help your long-term business survival, stability, and success. Some fields change more rapidly than others, but even when you're doing well you need to stay on top of what's on the horizon. The core basics of business are long-lasting, but it's particular techniques and changing needs where you're going to adapt over time.

2) Have you made noticeable progress in the structure and stability of your business?

It can seem like you're barely making progress on a day to day basis, but as long as you're moving forward you'll be able to notice major differences on a monthly and yearly basis. If possible, develop a system of tracking your results customized to your business. This will also give you feedback when you make a change to your marketing or advertising.

3) Do you have a long-term game plan?

Your business always needs a future direction. This may change and be altered over time, but you can't expect success out of shoot-fire-aim pattern.

4) Are you enjoying what you do?

For the short-term, many people do make sacrifices for a long-term reward. That is understandable, but not something you want to do your whole life. If you've come to the point where your business is making you miserable, you need to move toward using your skills in another format that you'll enjoy. You can find ways of making the same or more money without the negative side effects of stress. Never let anything cost your health or your peace of mind, including a business.

I hope you've found these ideas helpful. Good luck and best wishes!
