Recession-Proof Careers

Are there any?

Will the career choice you make withstand the storm of economic turmoil down the road? To make an informed decision, you need to look at the trends that occur during a recession.

1. Denial

Nobody wants to believe they have to scale back, lower their sights or accept a lesser lifestyle than they have become accustomed to.

When making a career decision, be realistic in view of the times. Originally you may have had your sights set on working as a CEO. During a recession, however, you may need to put that move on hold. At least temporarily. Consider a career that will be in demand throughout difficult times.

2.Tightening the money belt.

Consumers watch as prices increase, businesses close and the stock market wobbles about. Feeling less job security, their own spending habits begin to change. They become more careful about what they spend their money on, beginning to reduce luxury spending. And this is where the career choice enter in.

During a recession people begin to realize the difference between needs and wants. Your best career choice at this time will be in the area defined as necessity.

Two main categories stand out: Education and Health Care.

1. Education

Educating our upcoming generation is always a top priority. While heading toward a career in teaching, consider learning a second language . Teachers who offer bi-lingual skills have greater ease at finding, and keeping, a job. After all, you want to not only land a good job, but maintain it as well.

2. Health Care

More options appear in the health care field. If you decide to become an RN, you can supplement your income by by working as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) while attending school. If, however, you have not received your CNA certification, you can remain in your related field of study by working as a caregiver while working toward graduation in a nursing program.

You only have to turn to the classified to see the high percentage of health care jobs still in demand.

When considering your career choice, ask yourself: Is my decision based on a field of study where there is a continual need? In other words, is my choice recession-proof?
