Best value online degrees

Created on: January 19, 2009

With any online degree, the simple cost of the degree is not the only thing to consider when evaluating the best value. Some online degrees, no matter how inexpensive they are, are simply a waste.

When evaluating an online degree, some simple measures can be taken to ensure the online degree willl be the best value for you and meet your needs and goals. You will need to ask yourself the following questions:

ACCREDITATION:

If the school is not accredited, the degree has the potential to be rejected by employers, government jobs and military institutions. There is also no guarantee the subject or course material is accurate and up to date.

AVAILABILITY:

Both time and availability for the online class with regard to your own personal work or schedule as well as availability of instructors to answer questions and provide assistance. Flexibility with regard to hours of study requirements for the class.

SUBJECT MATTER:

The ability to obtain subject matter and course supplies, cost of subject matter, and whether it is provided, as well as how current the information is. Significant expense can accumulate if you accept a degree program because it is low cost and then the course materials are only available through the school, at an unexpected or outrageous expense.

PURPOSE, INTENT AND LENGTH OF DEGREE DESIRED:

Determine what the purpose of the degree will be. If it is just a refresher class, to stay updated, a less intense classes or course, can be handled as you are already familiar with the subject matter. Determine which course or classes in a course that will most benefit your purpose in the long run. Search for courses that will provide you an online degree that meet your goals the best.

BUDGET AND COST:

Research all costs involved with taking the course, including, testing center fees, parking when taking tests, costs to travel to the school or testing center, lab fees, course materials, upgrading computer equipment and network service costs. In addition to the regular cost of the course and course materials. Include any additional computer equipment or devices and lab materials or resources you may need to complete the course.

Once you have prepared this information, it will give you the basis to begin your search for the online degree that will be the best value and meet your needs. A website is available to help you find an accredited online school and can be found at http://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/. The schools are rated and evaluated and access to this information is also available on this site.

Included in this website, are a vast array of programs, their database is searchable, by degree type and length, cost, religion, size of school, online degrees available, two year or four year degrees, SAT, ACT scores and practically any other information that you could ever need to assist you with finding the best value online degree.
