While I am certain that every fan whose team did not make it to Miami this year is thought to be a disappointment, the truth is that most teams just were not deserving of that priveledge. That being said, a few teams were really expected to out-perform others, but did not even come close. So just who is the most disappointing team of the NFL 2006-07 season? A few candidates come to mind.
For starters, the Pittsburgh Steelers were the reigning champs. Pittsburgh managed to keep most of their key players intact and should have been a strong contender for a repeat. However, the Steelers couldn't win their division and did not even make the playoffs.
The Miami Dolphins early on had a golden opportunity to snatch up Drew Brees who would have solidified their need at the quarterback position. As we have seen through Brees' performance with the Saints, the guy can get the ball down the field. With a receiver like Chris Chambers on your roster and a QB who is a deep threat passer, the Miami run game would have benefitted tremendously. But the Dolphins let Drew Brees slip through their fingers and went with Daunte Culpepper.
A decision I am sure has their front office playing "Monday Morning QB" right now. With the way the Miami defense was playing as of late in the season, any kind of offense at all and we might have been watching the Colts playing the Dolphins for a trip to the big game this year.
Unquestionably the most disappointing team of the NFL 2006-07 season for me was the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers were picked very early at the onset of the season to represent the NFC in this year's Superbowl. They have been knocking on the door for the past couple of years and even made it once, only to lose to the Patriots. Carolina had what was thought to be the most talented, if not the best defensive front four led by Julius Peppers. Their offense was expected to have an extremely effective run game and by most accounts, were the team to beat in the NFC. Well the defense did not live up to expectations and Jake Delhomme had his worst year for Carolina to date. Carolina finished up the season with an 8-8 record just narrowly missing a wild-card playoff spot. For these reasons, the Carolina Panthers are the most disappointing team of the 2006-07 NFL season.
