Reflections: Things I've learned as a new mom

by Jennifer Brooks

Created on: January 19, 2009

Motherhood has definately changed my life. I look back and remember how I couldn't hardly wait to become an adult. Now I look back and long for childhood. I love my children with every beat of my heart.

Unlike most people who have major blown-out dreams for their lives, mine was simply to become a mother. It's so much more than what I expected though. I do however, mean for the better. The excitement, the anticipation of holding your baby in your arms is unbelievable. My three children are truly a blessing for the Lord.

I have learned that everything is not always peaches and cream. As a matter of fact, sometimes I cry my eyes out. I'm constantly on my knees asking the Lord for guidance on how to teach my children with the law of kindness on my lips. I strive and dedicate the time it takes to become that virtous woman it speaks about in Proverbs. I'm a strong believer that a mother needs to tnd to her own children.

I didn't pray and ask God for children just to let them be raised by strangers. I want to be the one to teach them moral behaviors and the like. As I mentioned, this is not easy. I have learned to develop one imporatnt trait in my own life. Patience. You have to understand that this is very important. I've also learned that at times, plans even change. You many have an important meeting, or job, or appointment, and on the spur of a moment your child can become sick.

I'll never forget that I was sitting in the Pediatrician's office for my child a routine check-up when another mom came in with her little boy. She complained the entire time that she had to take off work. She tried to deliberatley make the child feel guilty. I thought to myself, "Welcome to parenthood lady."

I'm a book minister that works from my home, but I'm always busy. There's clothes, floors, and dishes to be washed daily. Threre's striving for quiet time to do some writing. There's my parents wondering why we don't have time to visit. There's my husband wondering when will get some time alone. Even though there's some things to get use to, parenting also has many rewards.

It touches my heart to see my little girl stand on the altar at church singing Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, until all the guests arrive. It amazes me to see my oldest son come home from school with an honor roll award. My one year old son is precious as all get out. I wouldn't trade it for anything. We may not live in a mansion, but we do ahve a really nice home, that's completely paid for, and the best part is I get to stay home with them. At such tender ages they need me.
