The best superpower for a superhero

by Christopher Della Valle

Created on: January 19, 2009

Wow this is easy, I'd take everything encompassed by being bit by a radioactive spider =) Seriously though, this is a great question. Growing up, my friends and I would often ask this question, never coming up with an answer that satisfied everyone. I guess it depends on preference, if you're a tough guy you'd probably pick super strength, if the Goth scene is more your style you might pick the powers of Dr. Strange, and if you're a bit of a nerd you might want to pick intangibility (Mr. Fantastic) that way the insults would bounce off easier. (GET IT?!? Insults...Rubber...Bounce, aww that's funny) Anyways, the following are my top three best superpowers.

When it comes to superpowers I'll take the Lt. Maverick approach, "I feel the need, the need for speed." Super speed would be a great power to have. I mean who wouldn't like to run at Mach speed? Think about everything you could do with super speed. You could travel anywhere anytime you wanted. Could run fast enough to run across any body of water, who needs to spend thousands of dollars on airfare, when all you have to do is put on a pair of new Nike's and get to steppin. But running fast isn't the only ability you get when talking about super speed. The world moves slower, bullets slow to a snail's pace, punches and kicks look down right comical. Everything in you body moves faster, synapses fire faster, you react faster, and I bet with a little practice you could learn how to vibrate your molecules, which would allow you to walk through walls. Just imagine how many comics you could get through when reading at super speed?

How bout the power to move you? No I'm not talking about super guitar playing ability...cause some would call me a "guitar hero" already, I'm talking about telekinesis. Being able to truly see mind over matter in action. Lost the remote? Just change the channel with your mind! House work would be a breeze with telekinesis, run the vacuum, dust, and do dishes, all at the same time. Telekinesis isn't just a power for the lazy, it would also be a valuable for superheroes as well. Being able to subdue a gang of street toughs buy throwing them this way and that, and not even breaking a sweat. With some concentration a person with telekinesis could create an impenetrable shield that would block almost anything making body armor obsolete. Who needs a vehicle when your mind can lift you to anywhere you want to go, technically giving you the power of flight.

The last power that would make any hero super would being able to alter physical structure. Examples of this could be found in some popular Marvel characters. The Thing's altered state of stone is permanent, which is a huge downside, but there are some advantages as well. With that ability The Thing/Ben Grimm also has super strength and Nigh invulnerability. Some heroes that have the ability to change to and from their altered state are; Iceman(ice) , Human Torch(fire), Colossus(steel), and Emma Frost(diamond). All before mentioned heroes have additional powers when altered except Emma Frost, and who says diamonds are a girls best friend?
