Video game reviews: Rock Band 2 (Xbox 360)

Rock Band 2 follows closely on the heels of the original, which was released less than one year beforehand. Not surprisingly, the game play is consistent with the original game. However, there are various improvements spread throughout the sequel, as well as new gaming modes and a ton of new songs. The equipment too, is more durable for hours of game play.

Rock Band 2's developers listened to feedback from players and fixed some of the original game's problems. For instance, you can now create your ultimate inner rock star, complete with mohawk and labret, and use that character to play any instrument instead of being locked on to a single instrument. Band play is also more flexible, allowing band members to enter and leave the band as they please. Additionally, you can now customize your band tour by hiring "agents" who work for you to pull in more money or fans.

For the gamer looking for more thrills, there are now Tour Challenge and Battle of the Bands modes. Through these you can complete challenging set lists to unlock new content, or compete online with other bands for world rankings. These modes add even more exciting content to an already great game.

You can even create an online band with your friends and complete the tour that way.

The best part of the sequel is undoubtedly all the new songs. There are 84 new songs that come with the game, along with all the original Rock Band content that can be uploaded to the sequel for only five dollars more. In this category, there was certainly no scrimping, with many quality songs that will be known and loved by lots of players. You'll find artists like Bob Dylan, ACDC, and Linkin Park, and song favorites like "Hungry Like the Wolf", "Eye of the Tiger", and "My Own Worst Enemy".

There's literally something for everyone in this game. Of course, if you would get sick of those, there are also hundreds of songs available for download using Xbox Live points.

If you are buying the game for the first time, and buy the upgraded instruments, they are of a much improved quality. The drums are quieter, and the pedal is metal, instead of plastic.  The guitars, too, have a bit more heft and look like they will hold up much better than the original instruments did.

Rock Band 2 is a high-quality, expensive upgrade to the original game.  While not enough has changed to confuse a seasoned player, the upgrades are very worthwhile and the new songs alone are worth the price.
