On average, cats sleep thirteen hours a day and I know why. Simply put, they are bored. They drift from the bed, to the couch, to the back of the closet, all in a vain attempt to escape the, "same old, same old," of everyday cat existence.
Like people, cats need variety. Variety is not only the spice of life; it is an essential ingredient in the existential soup of existence. Try saying that three times after your third Scotch.
So let's look at a variety of ways to keep your cat entertained.
First, get to know your cat. Is he content to play by himself, maybe swatting a tethered bell or wrestling a stuffed, catnip-laced mouse? Or does he require social interaction to get his funk on?
If he is the independent sort, keeping him entertained is an easier task. Place a table under a window so your cat can view the outside world. From his perch, he can watch the birds and falling leaves as they flutter to the ground in the fall. Something as simple as an empty box can become a plaything. Cats love to hide, even when there is nothing to hide from, and a box, with its flaps askew, can be an inviting diversion. For the more discriminating feline, the Fling-ama-String Cat Toy is purrrrfect. Scratch posts can help keep kitty entertained. Besides helping to keep their claws clean, or marking their territory, the post is an ideal way for kitty to relax.
Cats that are more sociable thrive on interpersonal relationships. For them, whom they play with is as important as what they play with, so you will need to set aside some quality time to keep them entertained. Shining an ordinary flashlight can keep kitty chasing a light beam throughout a dark room. Avoid laser lights as they can cause eye damage. Try tying a yarn ball to your fishing rod. Catfishing is as much fun for the cat as it is for the angler. Simply cast and retrieve. When you get a bite, hold the rod tip high to prevent line entanglement, and reel him in. When fishing indoors, it is best to stay away from the good china.
Let your cat see the world from your perspective. Pick him up and walk around the house, letting him examine all the things that were previously out of reach. Show him the cuckoo clock or the medicine chest up close. Sounds simple, but my cat makes me give her the tour twice a week.
Most importantly, pay attention to your cat's needs. You can tell when he is hungry, and with a little practice, you will know when kitty is ready to be entertained.
