Short stories: Valentine's Day

by Maria Trudalidi

"We should go to the mall on V-day..." my friend Hillary, a 4'11 girl with dark-chocolate brown hair and bright pink high-lights, whispered, so only our table could hear.

"Why? What's so special about the mall on Valentine's day?" I asked innocently, leaning in closer.

"Uh, hello? All the couples? We should totally make fun of them!" my other friend, a short, dirty blond named Sahara, explained. I frowned and looked down. They didn't understand how much I wanted to be one of the couples on that special day.

"What's there to make fun of?" I said grimmly, almost to myself. My two hommies stared at me in disbelief. Another girl, a tall black-haired backet-ball star, walked into the room.

"Where were you Riley? We've been waiting for you for ages!" Hillary squeeled in delight as her best friend made her way to our table. I rolled my eyes. Now no one would ever be on my side. I looked at the clock, hoping somehow it was almost time to go home.

"Have you told them about the Plan?" Riley whisper-screamed into Hillary's ear.

"We can hear you, you know?" I said in a bored tone. Ten, nine, eight...

"Yes, and they're in!" Hillary claped her small hands in the air. Four, three, two... Ting-Ting-Ting-Ting! The bell rang and my heart skipped a beat.

"See you guys later," I mumbled and rushed out of the classroom. I almost forgot that two more classes awaited me. I grumbled, but reluctantly put my bag back in my locker and instead grabbed my binder and geometry book. On my way to the music room I saw him. The shiny light sorounding his shaggy hair. Only a few days ago I had realized that his hair was the same color as my own. I stepped out of his way, but managed to steal a glance at his face. That's when I realized something else - the most popular kid at school, a.k.a. Nigel, had been looking at me. Me, of all people! I immedeatly looked down and blushed. The funny thing is, as I was looking down, I was still trying to read his face. And that's when I noticed that he looked down at the same time as he saw me look at him, and that his normlly pale cheeks now were tinted pink. I almost dropped my things.

This kind of thing only happened in movies. She's a smart, nerdy nobody, he's the ultimate jock of the school. She loves him, and walks into walls staring at him (which, truthfully, has happened twice before), he doesn't even know her name, until the day he screams it out loud and clear (which happened just that day, before lunch).

My heart raced and my mouth became dry.

"Did you see
