Reflections: Teachers

by Belinda Southwark

Created on: January 18, 2009

Ah, my teachers. I think it's time for me to reflect and comment on them. In my primary school days, I had the worst teachers. Don't get me wrong, some of them were perfect! But my second year in primary school was hell with my 'charming' teacher Miss Barclay. She made me stay in over lunchtimes, rubbing all my mistakes out. And she put people at 'special tables' for talking. But the other teacher was horrid too, so I was damned anyway.

For my 5th and 6th years I had Mrs Allison. Now she was a bit unpredictable. She actually cried in front of us and insulted children, like on the occasion she put three boys in a row and labelled them 'Dumb, dumber, dumbest.' But she was alright sometimes.

In high school, the only teacher I didn't like was our 1st year Art teacher, Mr Waring. God, his eyes actually flew out of his sockets and seemed to insult or yell every two minutes. He also picked him nose, which is a bit random. The next year we had Mrs McPoland, strict, but a nice improvement. Sadly my junior science teacher retired before second year and I really wanted him for Chemistry...

But now we have Mr Atkins, who I like, simply for the fact that he doesn't yell when I forget homework (only happened twice!). In fact, all of our science teachers are great, even though Doctor Glassey seems to take Chess a little too seriously (he's our Biology teacher, but also takes Chess Club.) And of course, my favourite science teacher is my Physics teacher, Mr Timothy. Crazy seems to be the perfect word for him.

Now most people hate our English teachers, Madame Bernard and Mrs Artt. Well, they don't like Madame Bernard for....no reason I'm actually sure of...but they loathe Mrs Artt because the poor woman takes us for a double period in the afternoon. And her voice is similar to a vacuum cleaner or a bee, droning. Oh dear.

Our history teacher is legend. He's funny and he also seems to let us off work (YAY!) compared to the frightening Mrs Bradfield and Mr Montgomery (who we have for Citizenship...) And our maths teacher is also very nice compared to the scary Mrs Parker or the annoying Mrs Nugent.

Our language teachers are.....wicked! Mrs Gildea is completely mad, but hilarious and she gets so annoyed at Peter it's frightening and funny at the same time! Mr Moore is wayy more fun than the terrifying Mr Jackson (not Michael) and he actually stood on a table for no necessary reason.

So I do respect teachers. Sometimes they annoy me, when the yell at me or misinterpret me, but they are all brilliant. I would give them all a hug, but everyone would think I was crazy and disgusting. Well, I think I hugged two of my teachers or shook their hands. Ah, no one can criticise a handshake.... Reflections really do help you discover ingenious plans!
