Do children need educational toys?

Educational or Learning Toys and Children

Parents can get overwhelmed with all of the modern toys that are available for children. So many of these toys are called learning or educational toys. There are so many different kinds out on the market today and there are new ones coming out all the time. But are they any better than more traditional toys for our children. Don't let this overwhelm you, as the parent, just do a little bit of research and you will have a better grasp on what kind of toy is appropriate for your child. That is the idea that we will explore in this short article.

One thing parents need to consider when buying toys for their child is the child's developmental level because not all children develop at the same rate. Keep that in mind when buying any educational or learning toy. If your first grader is having problems with phonics then buying him/her a phonics educational toy or game would actually be a good idea. But if your children is great at reading then a phonics game would not be appropriate.

Educational toys are good if used at the right time in a child's development. You don't want to get a toy that is too complicated for your child to figure out. That might actually turn your child against learning because of frustration. Educational toys are meant to entertain your child as well as educate them in a fun way. On the other hand, you don't want to buy a toy that is boring for your child because it is under his developmental stage. An example of this would be, if you buy a first grader who is already reading a game that is teaching them their ABCs. Your child will become bored with the new toy completely and not play with it therefore there he/she will not receive any benefits from the toy.

Experts agree that educational or learning toys can help your child learn but it also important to keep in mind that your child has other developmental needs that can't be met with an educational toys alone. During the first three years of life your child will be developing the following skills: Vision, tactile response, hand-eye coordination, motor skills, imagination skills, concentration skills, creativity and social skills, cooperation skills, and responsibility. So just handing your child a toy and walking away is not in the best interest of your child. Your child need interaction with you and other children their own age. We certain want our children to be smart but we don't want them to not have any social skills. Good social skills will enable our children to know how to handle friendship and working relationships later in their life. In summary, educational toys are great for children but old fashioned play and interaction with other children and adults is just as important to our child's development. Parents need to be aware of their child's developmental level in order to buy the right toy. But parents also need to be aware that their child needs other basic skills that an educational toy alone will not help develop.
