to us, we can take spiritual comfort in knowing that we have much happiness despite the outside negativity that is looming.
There are practical ways to achieve a spiritual balance as well. Consider planting a vegetable garden this year to reduce costs at the grocery store. Working with the soil, planting, growing and nurturing a fresh vegetable garden is a wonderful way to get back in tune with Mother Nature and balance our spirituality. It is also an excellent activity to share with a life partner or children as it will bring you closer together, enhancing the energy of the family as a spiritual unit.
Consider those who are more dramatically affected by the economic crisis than you may be. Have you a closet full of out of date clothing that you need to go through? Start cleaning out your closets and donating your unwanted clothing, small appliances, unused children's toys, and the like to a local charity. Being generous and charitable and assisting those who are less fortunate is a wonderful way to gain spiritual peace.
With the economy being so unstable, everyone is looking for ways to reduce spending and the entertainment budget may well be the first to go. While slicing your entertainment budget may feel as if you are depriving yourself, it can become an enriching spiritual experience. Instead of going out to dinner several times a month, host simple gatherings of close friends at your home. You will save on gas, money and babysitting costs by entertaining in your home. Like-minded friends will be pleased to alternate hosting and spiritually a deeper bond can grow among your personal community.
Living a bit more simply can open you up spiritually in ways that you may have never anticipated. Consider the economic hardships our predecessors experienced, although they did not have much, they had family, friends and spirituality that carried them through the most difficult times and that are remembered in wistful nostalgic ways. Simple times and simple pleasures make spiritual peace simple as well.
Perhaps the doom and gloom we perceive as looming just ahead is really the universe trying to tell mankind to slow down, to reexamine the way we are living, to reconnect in a more human and spiritual way with each other.
Do we really need cell phones, laptops, email, text messaging keeping us constantly distracted from the people sitting in the same room with us? We have become a nation of "plug ins", constantly on and available and in communication with each other electronically. Perhaps this economic crisis is hinting at us to "unplug" and channel that energy put out into cyberspace into our own backyards, literally.
How much can we cut out of our budget if we cancel our cell phones? If you are not in a career that requires you to be on call, must you really possess a cell phone? Look around your house and tally up the costs of the electronics you own. Televisions, iPods, DVD players, CD players, computers, printers, high tech games and all the accessories and so forth that go with them. How much of this do you absolutely need to survive? Unplug your electronics and plug in your family and your spiritual balance will begin to give you great peace of mind, as you will realize that you will have the necessities required to survive regardless of what the stock market does tomorrow.
