If goal setting is not a strength, how do you learn to create and achieve successful goals? That is a common question, in January, when folks make their New Year resolutions. Unfortunately, we typically are not taught, in school, how to build strategic plans, or how to set goals and turn them into achievements. It is something that a person learns through hands-on experience, often by trial and error; or at work; or through books, online surfing, hobbies, sports, friends, and family members. I have learned how to keep resolutions, achieve goals, and do strategic planning, both in my personal and professional life, through all of those methods and then some.
If you are serious about making and keeping a New Year resolution, or learning how to achieve goals, the first step is to open your mind and believe that you can learn 'how' if you so choose. The second step is to make a firm 'decision to go for it'. The third step is to build a plan and 'take daily action', so that you can learn the 'how to's' of successful goal setting. In this case, if you exercise, you will feel great, build muscle, improve muscle tone, and over time, you will probably lose some weight and buy some new clothes. You are feeling good physically, so you begin eating healthier foods. Your self esteem is bolstered and you dream new dreams and tackle new challenges. All three goals - exercise, diet, and wardrobe - are intertwined and can work together to promote health and happiness. But first you have to identify and focus on one goal about which you have great interest and passion and take action! That one goal, and that one first step, will get the ball rolling in the right direction: momentum and achievement.
If you are not an experienced goal setter - one who can build and launch multiple action plans at once - it is important is to pick just one area of your life and focus your full attention on that area,
