Teen drivers: How to establish safety guidelines

Created on: January 17, 2009

Every parent is worried about their child starting to drive, and they should be. Teen drivers are very unexperienced, for driving a vehicle is not a natural thing. Man made these automobiles, so at a point in your life, you need to learn how to drive the machinery. Teenagers are just becoming adults, and learning how to adapt to these unnatural tools we have made to help our lives become easier.

So when your teen is driving out of control, it is because they are experimenting. They are new to this whole driving concept. They have to learn everything new, for the first time in their life, how to operate a vehicle. That does not mean they should go whatever speed they want and be out of control, still teach them the basic, proper laws needed to drive safely, and give them consequences that will keep them wanting to be a safe driver!

Since cars are man made, humans have no instinct on how to drive them, thus, having to learn from scratch. Thousands of years ago, there was no ways of transportation like nowadays, so every it of vehicle technology is something us humans have had to make rules to and learn at one point or another in their lives.

You may be asking, why can't I just not allow my teen a permit or license? Well, the answer to that is, because you need to practice, practice, practice! Practice makes perfect, so the more years of driving you get in (especially early on in life) the better you will be at driving. If you don't let your child drive, they will be worse off because they won't learn how until their brain has already been fully developed with littler room to expand.

So how can you make your teen safer behind the wheel?

-Don't overreact or freak out- Your kids can sense your scared, so they turn scared and nervous too! Making them worry about all that, on top of driving, is not safe and things will be worse. And there just as worried as you are!

-Talk calmly-Do not argue while you are driving, it can get your teen unfocused and they could lose concentration on more important things than conversation, like the road.

-Point out correctness-Instead of focusing on the mistakes, tell your teenager how good they are doing. Don't get me wrong, still give constructive criticism, for it will improve driving.

Yes, having a kid driving sure makes you feel old, but it is a big step in their life! So encourage it greatly, let them drive everywhere. Even if it's just a short distance; it may not seem to you like anything big, but just letting them drive to the store can make their day. Driving, is one step closer to independence.
