Before leaving the shore, have you checked the latest weather forecast? Do you fully understand what they are saying? Have any warnings been issued? In addition to the weather reports issued by the relevant authorities, you should also have some knowledge in understanding the "signs" given by various cloud formations, the way the wind is behaving etc. Remember the weather forecasts may have been issued by someone many miles from where you are, while you may see signs specific to your location.
When heading out to sea, whether it is for a day's outing or for longer, you should contact your local Coast Guard or similar body, advising them of your departure, your estimated time of return and details of your vessel, including how many people are aboard. You must also advise them of your return or any changes in plans. Failure to do this may instigate a search and rescue and great cost in time and money.
If you are the owner of a vessel heading to sea, you have a responsibility to everyone who boards your boat to know what is required. You should undertake a course in maritime safety. If you have been invited to join someone on their boat, do not be afraid to ask questions of the owner/skipper. If the vessel does not contain all the equipment state above, decline the invitation. If the skipper cannot show that he or she has the knowledge required, decline the invitation.
Always remember, once at sea, you cannot simply stop the boat and climb off.
