The economy crunch has gotten every American up in arms. Unemployment rates continue to rise, and companies close their doors every day. The only hope, the only option for many of us is a degree. We need a piece of paper to back up our knowledge and abilities. We need an edge on the competition. However, most of us don't have the time to return to school full time. And those of us, who weigh out our options, realize that part time night classes will take far too long. So distance education is the next road to look for.

There are a few guidelines to follow if you are contemplating earning an online degree. I have been in your shoes, and it took me three years to navigate myself to the starting line. My journey has been remarkable all the way. I'll share some of the things I've learned along the way.

Research

Most ground colleges have adapted to this IT world and have designed distance learning programs for Associates to Doctorates. You just have to find the right one, and be sure not to fall for scams. It is sad to sa, but they are in this avenue as well. They are called Degree Mills. These companies set up shop like a college or university, they offer a certificate, and sometimes some course material, for a nominal fee, then you receive a meaningless, worthless piece of paper. This is not the kind of paper you want backing you up in career world.

Check your top choices at ope.ed.gov to see if they are listed as a known degree mill, and learn more about these scams. Knowledge is the best gift you can give yourself along this journey. You can also look up your top choices on the Distance Learning College Guide. This site has pages upon pages of information on different programs and the schools that offer them, financing your education, and personal reviews from students taking courses and those who have completed their degrees.

Prepare

Start preparing now by tracking your time and creating a time budget. Distance learning may be your only option, but it will still take time. You will have to alter your normal routines, putting down the remote, walking away from the computer, and turning off the phone. A little bit of planning will save you heartburn latter.

You will want to block out times of 1-3 hours, at least three days a week for your studies. Get used to these times by using them to research as much as you can now about job opportunities and growth, financial aid, grants and scholarships, degree paths, and journal writing. This time will also be useful to start your application process, and transition to your studies.

Save cash

One thing I learned quickly is that college text books cost a lot more than grocery store magazines. One semester would have cost me around $600. I needed that cash to pay for m internet access and necessary computer programs. So I shopped around and found the best deals on used books. Some great places to start are; eBay.com, their sister site half.com , and textbook.com. Using these sources, I saved around $400, with which I was able to pay my internet bill.

Stay focused & make connections

The cyber classroom can become monotonous. You don't get to see your classmates and put a name with a face. You can't stay after class and ask your instructor questions. You also cannot get together at the library and form a study group. But, all of these interactions are still possible. Email is a valuable tool in the online learning environment. Make connections with your classmates by using the tools provided by your classroom, but keep the contact up as you move from course to course. Email your instructor as soon as you realize you are having difficulties. Start a study group on a social network site. The technology is there for you to utilize. If you want to earn your degree online, these tools are your keys to communication.

By making these connections you will truly experience your journey, and it will become more real to you. It will also help you build your network of like-minded individuals across the country. You will also have people following the same, or similar, path to trudge together. Walking a mile alone can feel a lot longer than walking a mile with a friend.

Enjoy your life

Enjoying every leg of your journey is the most important tip I can share with you. If you're not enjoying your journey, it's only a matter a time before you lose focus. If you want to succeed, you must remain focused. Therefore, it is imperative to enjoy the journey!
