How a good memory can be helpful to your career

The brain is a marvelous tool. It's multi function capability puts to shame the fastest computer with its ability to remember, calculate and solve problems in the shortest time. It has far more capabilities than we credit it for. Unfortunately, for many, the brain does not get the kind of use it requires to stay sharp. And a good portion rests in the ability to remember.

A good memory has several important elements that work together to produce a superior mind. Storing information is an important activity for when that information needs to be retrieved later. But the way we store that information has a bearing on how we make decisions based on experience. Unlike a computer we are emotional beings and emotions often clouds the ability to remember and making judgements.

The first step toward a good memory is to store information accurately. You need to be focused on what you want to remember without biases and emotions getting in the way.

Learning is a vital ingredient to developing a good memory. What you learn at school helps you to find a better job and become a key player for the company you work for as you go about solving problems. Learning doesn't stop once you have a diploma. Throughout life, learning helps to develop the mind. If you're not learning, you're stagnating. One neglected part of learning is the ability to learn from your mistakes that results in better performance.

The ability to remember is especially important when you find yourself in situations that demand a quick decision. An accident at a nuclear power plant won't give you the time to read the reference book. Only your past experiences, education and a logical ability to see a solution will help you. All of them require using your mind for retrieval of stored information.

Developing a good memory is not as difficult as it may seem. You can never remember what you never took time to pay attention to. You need to be attentive to where you put your keys and those items that seem to magically disappear when you're looking for them.

Organizing is a part of developing a good memory. A cluttered office desk leads to frustration as you can't find what you're looking for. Organizing means writing things down. Unless you're an expert like Harry Lorayne, one of the foremost memory experts and author of such books as How to Develop a Super Power Memory, you'll forget appointments and lists. The very act of writing anything down forces you to activity use and improve your memory.
