Recession-proof careers

Falling house prices, conservative consumer spending, rising unemployment and slow growth are all indicators that today's economy is in a state of recession. While some jobs may be hard to come by in a stagnant market place, there are lots of fields that have managed to be recession proof. Some of these are:

Information Security
Advent of on-line banking and automatic bill paying, purchasing everything with a click of the mouse have accelerated the need for Internet Security.
Skills: College degree in Information Security
is a good start to get a foot in the door in this field. Vendor Specific certifications, like Cisco, are also useful. Some IT workers also branch out to specialize to pursue vertical growth in Information Security.

Health Care
The health care field is in need of trained professionals in any economy. Allied health care professionals like dental hygienists, ultrasound specialists pay more than $40,000 with only 2 years of training.
Skills:Most allied health professional jobs require an Associate degree or a certificate program in the specific discipline.

Environment
Global warming is no longer a remote possibility in a futuristic science fiction novel. The need for being environmentally aware has put made the environment a hot button issue today.
Skills:Many environmental scientists earn degrees in life science, chemistry, geology, geophysics, atmospheric science, or physics and then, either through further education or through their research interests and work experience, apply their education to environmental areas.

Alternative Energy
President Barack Obama plans a $150 billion dollar in alternative energy technology to reduce dependence on foreign oil and improve energy efficiency, over the next 10 years. States like Michigan already see renewable energy as their future for jobs in an economy hit by recession.
Skills: Courses and research centers, on solar, wind and hydroelectric power are commonplace. Some community colleges in Arizona and San Juan in New Mexico offer degrees in solar design and installation and energy-efficient building.

Child Care Industry
With more and more women joining the work force, dependable and qualified child care professionals are in high demand.
Skills: Patience, flexibility and a love for children.

Pharmaceuticals
Like the allied health care industry, pharmaceutical industry seems recession proof because of ever-increasing newly invented diseases and a record number of senior citizens. Some jobs in this industry are pharmacist, sales representative or being involved in R&D.
Skills: A pharmacist degree typically involves 6 years of post-secondary education.
