Reflections: Childhood dreams

by Lori King

Childhood dreams. We have all had them and some of these dreams stay with us for years to come. Most of the dreams that I have had as a child were not very pleasant. A lot of them were of scary things that I did not want to think of. I remember as a child, roughly seven I believe, I had been asleep in my parents bed. We lived in a double wide trailer at this time. I was facing the door way to their room when I woke up. I looked in the doorway and there I saw a head floating in mid air. It was evil, grimacing. I was so terrified of what I was seeing I couldn't even move. I told my parents the next day and they said I was just dreaming and my older brothers laughed at me. I was wide awake when I saw the head. I was not asleep but no one would believe me. I even wrote about it in a journal that we kept in my second grade class. Most of my journal for that class was about these scary things and how awful it was to see them. The teacher said that I was a gifted speller/writer and had a knack for English. That's great. I've been trying to write for many years now but having no success at finishing anything.

The next dream that I remember was something I had dreamed of just before I started the fifth grade. First off, this dream I had was one of the future. As I got older I often dreamed of things and the next day or week these things happened and it would give me a sense of deja vu and it didn't always feel right to me. Anyway, the dream I had was about a girl named Debra. My dream was about starting the fifth grade and meeting this girl. I dreamt she even came to my house and about all of the things we did.

Soon enough we started school after the summer break and I was in my fifth grade class and that's when I met her. Her name was Debra and we hit it off as best friends right away. It was like we had known about each other the whole entire time. She came over to my house and she said that it was funny because she had a dream about my house and felt as though she had been there before. We were best friends for a few years until we reached early high school because that is when most kids grow up and move on to new friends. We did just that. We still talked and spent time with all the same people but she was into different kinds of things that I was not involved with. She left our school in high school and moved to California. I have not really heard much word from her since all the letters I used to get from her. I hear she's doing well but still no word from her directly.

Another crazy dream that I had when I was in high school was being pregnant and being married to a man with dark hair. Needless to say, I married a man with dark hair and we have two kids whereas in that dream, I had twin girls. In real life, I later had two girls but not twins. Coincidence? Maybe the dream was just telling me that there would be two girls, not necessarily twins? These things are very strange but I believe people can see past themselves when in a certain state of mind. Everything flows so freely when we are asleep that anything can come into mind, real or fake.
