With the impending departure of George W Bush from the White House, Americans are rightly concerned with how their new President will measure up to the difficult task of guiding the country through these challenging times. But there appears to be little discussion about the vastly improved situation as far as the security of the US and it's citizens is concerned.
I believe Americans should be breathing a great sigh of relief now that Osama Bin Laden has lost his chief recruitment officer. Suddenly, the job of recruiting and funding new terrorists has lost it's second best performer in George W Bush and there doesn't appear to be an obvious replacement on the horizon. Instead of the billions of free dollars from the Bush Administration (cheerfully donated by the US taxpayers), Osama is going to have to spend his own money to try and maintain the levels of volunteers and purchase bomb making material.
This is no easy task. The free ride provided by Bush was a huge financial commitment that no single other country or interest group can ever hope to match. Gone also is the frequent use of the word "God" another invaluable tool to inspire a negative reaction amid the volunteers.
With one quick visit from the removalists vans to the White House, Osama now has to survive the negative reaction to him in those non-Christian countries where the distaste for him and his tactics was flooded by the hatred Bush managed to engender.
Now Osama can no longer hide behind Bush's skirts, the death and destruction dealt out by him and his organisation will now suffer in the full glare of publicity it richly deserves. Countries where he has been attempting to destabilise the incumbent Government will be viewed without any distraction caused by American behaviour.
How can this man survive in the new world order?
First and foremost he needs a new super villian. One who is as easily duped as the outgoing Bush. Someone who regularly invokes the Christian Lord's name and is too thoughtless or arrogant to think through the consequences. I'm guessing there are always candidates with a view to a political career regardless of the cost but I can't see any heavy hitters to compare with the US "Demon" Osama has enjoyed so far.
Secondly, he is going to need multiple new sources of capital. And plenty of them. An even more difficult problem now that controls on international funds transfers have been tightened up.
Thirdly, expect more "air time" from the elusive terrorist. Now that he has to run his own publicity campaign Bin Laden will have to work a heck of a lot harder. Perhaps the more frequent tirades will even produce a slip up that will reveal his location. We can only hope.
Now I am not predicting the imminent demise of this character. The nebulous nature of his hateful "business" is not easily dealt with but these new limitations are going to see the end of his gravy train ride on US funding. Inevitably his is going to have to "down size" his organisation and hopefully we will find he has far less influence in the world.
