How parents make an only child over-protected or a brat

averted and the child would be able to explore a bit and learn how to navigate in it's environment.

Parents of the only child need keep in mind that although their child is special, all children are special, and if they wish to raise a healthy and socially functionaly child they should concentrate on making decisions for their child as to when is the right time to wean, potty train and learn to delay gratification. Exposing the only child to other children at age appropriate social events like play dates on a regular basis and not ensuring that the only child always gets their way will help stimulate healthy socialization. Concepts like sharing and taking turns are difficult for an only child to learn if they do not have a chance to be around other children and should be encouraged whenever possible.

An only child can practice sharing with parents and grandparents and should be praised and encouraged as they learn to do so.

Reading up on usual and customary child development will help the parents to gauge where their child is at developmentally. If it seems that the only child is a bit behind the curve in some areas then the parents can focus on assisting the child in reaching the appropriate developmental stage rather than stifling development by being over attentive and over indulgent.
