Having a sharp and a clear mind helps in all life situations and particularly so at work. Imagine yourself in the middle of a presentation and your mind goes blank, what do you do? Apart from filling the blanks with anything you might think relevant, you are in trouble. It is one scenario that can become a reality if you have a poor memory and are not good at retaining facts. There are several areas at work where a good memory will serve you well.
RETAINING INFORMATION - If you get an urgent message which needs to be delivered and you do not have the facility to write the information down, having a good memory will serve you well. It is a great quality to be able to retain facts and information easily and we all have come across people who can recall relevant data and information easily. This quality is particularly helpful in a marketing and sales environment where networking is vital. Remembering the names of clients and what they do can help create a personal touch when you meet them in social or work situations. It can also prove useful when you have to introduce them to some business associates or vice versa.
ORGANISATION - Having a good memory will help you to remember where you have filed things, where that important piece of information about a product was kept and the name of the person you dealt with on the phone a week ago. More so, a good memory will help you remember where you kept the keys of the office while you were busy dealing with an important job in hand. Having a good memory will definitely get you out of some sticky and embarrassing situations when you can be left feeling inadequate and quite "blank".
LEARNING - Retaining facts is always good when you are learning new concepts and this can give you the extra edge when you have to present these facts at meetings or presentations. If your job entails travelling, a good memory will help you get to places easily without continually getting lost or having to ask the way from every passerby. If you have to sit for an examination your memory's ability to retain and access vital information and facts will definitely be to your advantage.
ACCURACY - A good memory helps you record things accurately based on actual facts rather than on guesswork. This reduces the chances of errors and improves your chances of performing well as an employee. You have less chances of getting into trouble for stating wrong facts or giving the wrong information because you just couldn't remember.
SELF CONFIDENCE - The ability to remember information and facts helps to increase your self confidence. You know you can remember things well and you can use this to your advantage. In addition the quicker you retain information the more efficiently you can utilize it and complete tasks promptly. Efficiency in employees translates into better performance and is beneficial to the overall performance of the company.
RELIANCE You instinctively rely and trust someone who remembers facts well. You know their word will hold more credibility than someone who cannot remember what they did an hour ago. This is an ability that makes them appear more intelligent and reliant and it is definitely a good quality to have.
All the above qualities can lay the foundation for a successful career but if you do not have a particularly good memory don't lost heart. One good thing is that you can improve your memory by cultivating good eating habits and exercising. Doing brain training exercises and learning to focus and concentrate on one thing at a time will help to get that brain working better. The basic principle is, the more you use your brain the better your memory gets!
