Life in the country was usually lots of fun. I can remember one really hot and muggy summer night, about 55 years ago in Mississippi.
It was pretty late for girls twelve and fourteen years of age, to still be up. But with all the exciting, busy, hustle and bustle that was going on in our house that night, it was impossible for Tolly and me to settle down. The grown ups were having a juke dance at our house and all the music, noise and excitement was so loud, " that it felt like the ground it self shook, with song and dance." The music seemed to bring out agilities in some of the adults, of which was hard for me and my sister Tolly to believe. This was because most adults, weren't usually good at doing the latest dances.. They were always calling on us kids, to show them the latest dance moves. Even though it was a very rare occasion, when one of them actually caught on. But it was always hilarious, to check out the dances they would do, even though most of them looked surreal doing them and when the only encouragement they got from us, was our heart felt laughter. They'd just wave us off, ( spouting out that we didn't know what real dancing was.) I mean they just looked so ridiculous, more like some strange mating rituals and they danced with to much emotion, which made them look really silly to us young folk.
The expressions on some of their faces were kind of scary and very embarrassing as well. Mainly because," they seemed much to serious, to only be dancing". But over all, it was fun, cause nights like these were rare at our house. So the distractions were very much welcomed by me and Tolly and momma always seemed to be having such a good time too.
Later on in the evening, after momma had sent me and Tolly to our room, she'd always show up at some point and surprise us with plates of the delicious foods they'd cooked.
This was always the greatest treat of all, because the cooking that was done,(back then) would definitely heighten the senses and have your mouth watering and your stomach growling. simply from the smells alone. Everything seemed to taste especially good, under those circumstances. So we ate, laughed, licked our fingers and stayed in the back room where we were expected to and had a party of our own.
However, the next morning the first words our mother called out to us were, Peaches, Tolly, time to get up girls. As always we knew what would follow. "Just as well as the pigs knew when it was slopping time". So after momma had prepared us a light
