Poetry: On poems

by Ethel Smith

I love to read poems,

that are quirky and queer,

like those nonsense rhymes

of Edward Lear.

Many are short,

silly and funny,

making you smile

and making him money.

Now I am no poet,

of that I am sure,

but I write little rhymes

which I hope do not bore.

These make me smile

and feel good to do,

and I hope dear reader

do the same for you;

Because poetry is strange

and hard to define,

yet it hit's the spot

for most of the time.

Whether its sadness or love,

peace or war,

poetry can express

so much more

than simple prose,

but I don't know why,

a poem can almost

make you fly.

Now back to that man,

young Mr Lear,

the one with the poems

so odd and so queer,

such as the one with

The Owl and The Cat

in a pea green boat,

now fancy that,

such a silly poem

has inspired so many

to sit and write poems

both serious and funny.
