If you are in the process of seeking a work from home job the first thing you need to be aware of is there are a number websites that in fact offer you the opportunity to work at home. Unfortunately, there are many that simply are not not legitimate! Beware of any sites that offer you a legitimate work at home job but asks you to pay a fee up front!

Develop yourself

Find a way to create an online presence for yourself through Helium, blogging, social networking and other potential sources of referrals. This will be the beginning of your online reputation so don't put anything there that you wouldn't want on a job application!

Create a portfolio

Highlight your skills by developing a portfolio of work. If you are a writer you can accomplish that by doing it here on Helium, on Associated Content, on Hub Pages and Squidoo or by highlighting your portfolio in a blog;

Network

Find other people who you know who already work at home. The best way of finding legitimate work at home jobs is to ask around. Message boards, Communities, and even your local Freecycle and other networking lists. These lists may allow opportunities to find legitimate work at home jobs.

Be consistent

Don't bounce around from Affiliate Programs to pay for work websites (though you should always branch out and investigate your opportunities). What you don't want to do is change your skills on each location! If you're a writer you should always be highlighting your writing skills, a graphic artist should be always highlighting graphics skills, etc. Being consistent with your goals can help you develop a stronger portfolio, a stronger profile and help your message get out.

Be proactive

Work from home jobs are not going to come and find you! Be persistent in your search for legitimate work at home jobs. You can find many ways to apply for jobs but it takes time, persistence and patience.

Things to Avoid:

If you're searching for legitimate work at home jobs do not try working on websites that offer you vague information until you pay a fee up front. Too often, these "jobs" turn out to be sales sites and are often overloaded with double speak. The unscrupulous owners of these sites will relieve you of some of your money, but you'll likely never find a job using the site!

Lack of guarantees are common when searching for work at home jobs. Do not fall prey to these sites where you have to pay dollars up front. None of us expects any website is going to guarantee us a minimum amount that we'll be paid. However, the least you should expect a guaranteed payment of any monies you do earn.

There are many legitimate work at home jobs. The secret to your success is finding a legitimate work at home job by plowing through the thousands of opportunities that are available. Don't give up, there are opportunities for you to make money working at home.
