Single parents face a unique battle each and everyday. Trying to do the work of two parents as only one person is a feat that is short of a miracle. Stress can take down even the most dedicated parents to make them nothing more than a working robot. Work, children, and social life are very tough and can often pull in different directions. It is important for single parents to take time for themselves so that they are better equipped to deal with the rest of the real world out there.
One suggestion for single parents is to set aside some alone time to do something that you enjoy. Whether it's bowling, having a beer or a relaxing bath with dim lights and soft music. A few moments can be set aside anytime your schedule allows. Try reading a book and relaxing the body at night when the kids are off to bed. You will be surprised what just 30 minutes can do for your life.
Get with other parents to arrange get togethers. Chances are there are other single parents out there that are in the same situation that you are in. Get together with these people to plan an event. Kids will entertain themselves while you can focus on engaging in a social life. Look around your area for play rooms that allow the kids to run around indoors without having the fear of getting taken away.
Slumber parties are great, as long as they are not at your house. Maybe a few parents can plan a slumber party for the kids giving the other parents a break. This idea is great because it won't cost anything to have a babysitter, as long as you agree to return the favor. Most times if there are three parents in the deal, that means two days off and one on. Take the extra time to go out and do the things that grown-ups need to do.
Some find peace and relaxation when they attend church. Church groups are great since they offer kids programs during the normal service giving you some time being an adult. Some churches have bible study during the week for kids as well that could potentially give an hour or two to get some more time alone.
It is always important to keep yourself from becoming burnt out on the doing the same things day in and day out. When you feel that things are getting too tense, take a few minutes to do something to reward yourself. Bringing up children in a single parent home is difficult and is worth rewarding yourself. Praises are few and help is sometimes even more rare, just remember to take care of yourself so that you are ready to take care of the family.
