Poetry: Truck drivers

by Gary Lewis

Created on: January 15, 2009

From ocean to ocean I make my livin',
This eighteen wheeler gypsy life.
If ever should another path be given,
I'd trade it all for a loving wife.

So it's Highway 80, 95 or 10,
Drive the load from New York to Butte or Austin.
From Chi Town or Charlotte and back again,
It's Seattle to Plant City, L.A. to Boston.

Miles have I driven far,
I've witnessed America's wonders.
Crossed mountains and plains under cloud and star,
While normal lives in peaceful slumber.

Totally unbeknown are they,
That what they eat or drive or wear.
Had to come from somewhere so far away,
Then finding out would they really care?

From hauling taters, grain or bricks,
Everything is fingerprinted by me, I'm the man.
That stack of lumber's just a bundle of sticks,
And I'm still bouncing tires from the back of the van.

Chain up those drives for passes of snow,
I don't complain for it's been a great life.
Down through those valleys far below,
But I'd trade it all for a loving wife.
