5) In the long term, education is an excellent way to command a higher salary. Gaining qualifications might mean taking evening classes, studying part-time or even leaving work to go back to school or university, full-time. In the short term, education will probably be a drain on your financial resources, but in the long run, it can pay off, handsomely.

6) Some workplaces offer payment each year if you take on additional duties. Become a fire warden or a first-aider and you may stand to gain a modest bonus, in return for a little extra responsibility; it will also look good on your resume and give you some useful life skills.

7) Many companies have award schemes. If your performance is excellent and you have influencing skills to match, you may find yourself in line for one or more of these. And even if you don't win an actual cash prize, you could snag yourself a free dinner or night out, courtesy of the company, which can be almost as good; winning an award, in itself, is also a fine boost to your morale.

8) Working two jobs is yet another option which will definitely increase - perhaps even double - your salary. It is a challenge, though, and not everyone can stand the long hours and the toll it can take on your health. Your bank balance might be doing very well indeed, but stress, physical exhaustion and lack of sleep may lead to burnout. Think long and hard before you go down that road.

Outside your main workplace, there are more things you can do to bring in extra cash:

9) One of your hobbies could turn into a lucrative source of revenue. Writing, cooking, blogging, making and selling your own jewellery and artwork - these are activities you can pursue in the evenings or at weekends and which may bring you another income, as well as being highly enjoyable in themselves.

10) Selling items via eBay or Amazon can also be a great idea. Do you own things that you no longer use, and which might net you some welcome cash? Carry out an inventory of all the stuff you have, and it may be a very nice surprise to discover there are plenty of valuable items abandoned in your attic or cupboards that you could easily and willingly part with. You will also free up some space in your home, which is an excellent bonus. There are increasing numbers of people who have been so successful at online selling that they have managed to turn it into a whole new career for themselves - maybe you too will end up doing this.
