There are a surprising number of ways in which to increase your salary. Some are very obvious, and I'm sure my readers will have already thought of several, such as being promoted to a more senior position. But there are also quite a few not-so-obvious ways you can funnel much-needed cash into your bank account, and you might be pleasantly surprised to find there are methods of supplementing your main income that have never occurred to you before.

Below, I have listed 12 ways; I'm sure there are plenty more, and that you will be able to think of additional ones. But anyway, here's a start:

1) Getting a promotion is an extremely obvious way of boosting your salary. There are time-honoured methods of achieving this, and the more reputable ones are: hard work, diligence, a high degree of competence, going the extra mile and having good scores in emotional and social intelligence. A combination of two or more of the above will definitely help you, as will a certain amount of luck.

2) Going the extra mile deserves a paragraph of its own. This doesn't have to mean longer hours or a heavier workload; it might mean going out of your way to offer superb service to your customers. Or it might mean figuring out a way in which the company could save money or increase its profits; at the end of the day, companies must consider the bottom line, and if you can make a positive difference here, you are likely to be rewarded (make sure they notice you, though - don't labour away in obscurity.)

3) Competence also deserves special mention. We all come into this world with different abilities and potential - some are better with numbers, others are more verbal or have better spatial awareness. But there are plenty of things you can do to leverage the skills you have. Time management techniques will enable you to make the most of your working hours, for instance. There are also simple but effective ways of improving your memory. De-cluttering your workspace (and your home!) will also reap dividends. And if your company provides access to courses and tutorials on anything pertaining to your job - take up the offer.

4) Changing your job is another obvious one. There may be positions similar to yours, but which pay more, in other departments or other companies. However, as with promotion, when your salary goes up, your tax will increase as well, proportionally; it is also a good idea to find out beforehand if you will find yourself in a higher tax bracket and start to pay even more each
