Traveling with kids in Oahu

After spending three days golfing and surfing, my wife, who passed the days tending our children, wondered what had happened to the "family" vacation in Oahu until I provided her with a list of family friendly destinations on Oahu for tourists with children under six.

WAIKIKI AQUARIUM
2777 Kalakaua Ave
Queen Kapiolani Park
Honolulu, HI 96815
808-923-9741
http://www.waquarium.org/

Kids love sea turtles, eels, and sharks. So do parents, unless they're being swallowed by one. The Waikiki Aquarium offers a safe, educational, and entertaining option. You'll be tempted to ditch the informational wand that comes with admission, but don't. You rest. They push wand buttons and point at fish.

HONOLULU ZOO
151 Kapahulu Ave
Honolulu, HI 96815
808-971-7171

Done with fish? Go to the zoo in Honolulu. Enjoy 42 acres of animal habitats, filled with rhinos, wart hogs, crocodiles, and tigers. Bring food into the zoo and enjoy a nice meal at one of the designated picnic areas. They get really mad, however, if you don't clean your mess. They might even feed you to the crocodiles. Park across the street; it's free and not far.

KAPIOLANI PARK
3840 Paki Ave
Honolulu, HI 96815-4523
(808) 971-2525
http://www.kapiolanipark.org/

King Kalakalaua created the 500-acre Kapiolani Park in the 1870s. It hosts the Kodak Hula Show, outdoor concerts, and athletic contests. The park is perfect for an afternoon picnic and some exercise for the entire family. Metered and free parking is available in the two lots and along the street near the Honolulu Zoo and Waikiki shell.

ALA MOANA BEACH PARK
1201 Ala Moana Boulevard
http://www.hawaiiweb.com/html/ala_moana_bea ch_park.html

It's Hawaii. Go to the beach. Ala Manoa Beach Park's large grassy areas helps decrease the amount of sand ingestion by infants and toddlers. Barbecues and picnic tables help increase the amount of food ingestion by infants and toddlers. After a delicious cookout, get some exercise in the calm waters of Ala Moana Beach. Weekday picnics are peaceful. Scavenging for a parking spot, tramping around with a bag of charcoal, a plaid picnic blanket, a gigantic cooler, and three hungry children are likely on the weekend if you don't plan ahead.

KO OLINA LAGOONS
Off Farrington Highway
Southwest O'ahu

Grassy picnic areas, sand castle materials, and calm waters for neophyte swimmers make the Ko Olina Lagoons ideal for families. Showers and restrooms help remove sand from your little
